LM 001  Rehearsing the languages of birds   A collaboration with Donald Atkinson, a poet published by Arc Publications & Peterloo poets, winner of the Peterloo Poets Prize and the TLS Cheltenham Festival Prize, both in 1988.  “Rehearsing the languages of birds” is a substantial piece about birdsong, and the love between twin sisters.  It is polyphonic, with dense, rich textures.  It was first performed by the Hepton Singers in July 2007, and a revised version in 2009.  SATB with occasional divisi, plus small soprano & tenor solos. Duration approx 15 mins.

LM 002  Afresh, seven times    A second collaboration with Donald Atkinson, setting seven short, haiku-like poems about moments in the natural world.  This piece is more antiphonal, spare, experimental, but with varied moods and textures.  It was first performed by the Hepton Singers in July 2010.  The seven pieces could be performed individually – see LM017-LM023 below to hear extracts of each of these pieces.  SATB with divisi.  Duration approx 15 mins. (Individual pieces approx 2 mins each.)

LM 019 Small birds and their shadows One of the pieces from “Afresh, seven times”, but may be performed as a stand-alone piece. SATB, SAT all dividing in places.  Duration approx 2 mins.

LM 021  In the orchard   One of the pieces from “Afresh, seven times”, but may be performed as a stand-alone piece. SATB, ATB all dividing in places.  Duration 1.5-2 mins.

LM 022  Joking apart…  One of the pieces from “Afresh, seven times”, but may be performed as a stand-alone piece. SATB with divisi.  Duration approx 2 mins.

LM 003  For the waters are come in   A sacred piece, with text from Psalm 69.  SATB with divisi.  Duration approx 4 mins.

LM 004  The parable of the fig tree   A sacred piece, with text from St Luke’s Gospel.  SATB, some divisi in S and T, with A and B solos.  Duration approx 3.5 mins.

LM 005  Enchanted   A collaboration with the poet/playwright Angela Cairns, about a boat trip to remote Scottish islands, first performed in June 2010.  SSA, duration approx 4 mins.

LM 006  Sea Songs   An atmospheric setting of three Emily Dickinson poems, premiered in October 2010 by the vocal ensemble Alyssium.  SSA, duration approx 10 mins.

LM 007  My river runs to thee   One of the pieces from “Sea Songs”, but may be performed as a stand-alone piece.  SSA, duration approx 4 mins.

LM 008  Setting sail   One of the pieces from “Sea Songs”, but may be performed as a stand-alone piece.  SSA, duration approx 3 mins.

LM 009  The errand of the eye   One of the pieces from “Sea Songs”, but may be performed as a stand-alone piece.  SSA, duration approx 2.5 mins.

LM 010  To Eros in Winter   A setting of a short poem by Donald Atmkinson (see above), about love in old age.  First performed by members of Alyssium in February 2012.  SA duet, duration 1-1.5 mins depending on tempo.

LM 011  From the parsonage   A collaboration with Amanda Dalton, who is a poet/playwright published by Bloodaxe Books, and whose plays have been performed on BBC radio.  The three pieces in this collection set versions of poems she wrote while on a residency at the Brontë parsonage in Haworth.  They were premiered by Alyssium in February 2012.  For 4- and 6-part women’s voices, duration 9-10 mins.

LM 013  Shiver   One of the pieces from “From the parsonage”, but may be performed as a stand-alone piece.  For 6-part women’s voices, duration approx 3.5 mins.

LM 014  Skittering quills and wishes   One of the pieces from “From the parsonage”, but may be performed as a stand-alone piece.  SSAA, duration  approx 3.5 mins.

LM 015  To make a prairie   A setting of three Emily Dickinson poems in a single piece, all concerning the subject of bees… First performed by Alyssium and Menfolk Waits in February 2012.  SATB, all parts divisi.  Duration approx 6 mins.

LM 016  And so we built   This work was commissioned by Hebden Bridge Community Association and  performed at the opening ceremony of the new town hall building in June 2012.  The words would be appropriate for the opening of any new building.  SATB, small divisi in A and T.  Duration 4-5 mins.
